Patrick Young,  DVM

Dr. Patrick Young was raised as the youngest of 10 children, in a family full of medical doctors. So his interest in medicine came naturally. Veterinary medicine became his pursuit, a natural fit for his love of outdoors and animals. So at a young age he began volunteering at his local veterinary clinic.

In the ultimate pursuit of a degree in veterinary medicine, Patrick chose Texas A&M as his college of choice. He received a Bachelors degree in Animal Science with a minor in Biomedical Sciences.

While trying to gain admission into veterinary school, he worked as a cowboy for two years on a stocker cattle ranch. Calling it ,”The best two years of my entire education.”

After graduation from Mississippi State University-CVM, Patrick spent several years learning and mentoring under leaders in equine medicine and surgery across the country. Eventually he settled in Oklahoma to start his practice and raise a family.

Dr. Young is an avid horseman, competing in weekend cuttings on his quarter horse gelding, Farm Cat, aka “Pops”. He trained and competed as a triathlete for several years, and is a two-time Ironman finisher.

In 2014, he moved his family to Bend, OR and has been focusing on building two new businesses. First and foremost his equine veterinary practice, specializing in equine sports/regenerative medicine. He loves the problem solving aspect of equine lameness and subtle performance issues. Prides himself on helping owners/ horses with challenging cases such as suspensory ligament desmitis. He explores new opportunities in regenerative medicine often extrapolating human medicine and scientific research into his daily clinical veterinary practice.

His second passion was born out of necessity for the health and well-being of his patients and other animals. In 2014, he successfully researched and licensed a new vaccine for Pigeon Fever in horses. He began to see an increase in the number of cases of this emerging disease. So as a veterinarian with years of clinical experience, a degree in Animal Science and a minor in Biomedical Sciences , he developed one. This opened his eyes to a new world and opportunities in animal health. So he started a biotech company, and Bird Dog Bioventures was born. Pioneering solutions for under served areas of animal health and veterinary medicine.

All of these experiences led him to where he is today, fueled by a dogged determination to help animals via common sense scientific approach.

Jeff Breit, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeff Breit has been engaged in the biological sciences for most of his life, exposed to drug development at an early age at his father’s biotechnology company.  He went on to define innovative pathways in cancer biology while in graduate school and helped develop novel drug products as a research scientist while at Bend Research Inc.  The goal of Dr. Breit’s work has always been a simple mission to define new ways of treating disease and improving health, whether the patient be a human or a horse.

Dr. Breit’s academic research at the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama focused on understanding cellular pathways involved in cancer propagation through research on angiogenesis and lung cancer.  While working in the lab of Dr. Mark Gillespie, Dr. Breit had the opportunity to contribute to the fields of gene regulation and pulmonary disease.  After earning his doctorate, he went on to perform research at Roche Pharmaceuticals in Northern California before being recruited to Bend Research where his career focused on creating new technologies to enable novel drug products.

While at Bend Research Dr. Breit consulted and worked with large pharma and biotech companies as well as companies focused on developing novel animal health products.  His research focused on a number of fields such as inhalation delivery, oral drug delivery, protein formulation, nanotechnology platforms, vaccine development, protein manufacturing, biopolymer manufacturing as well as buccal and transmucosal delivery across epithelial barriers.  The ability to interact with large pharmaceutical teams as well as very small and virtual biotechnology companies has enabled Dr. Breit to work with a wide range of clients and be exposed to an even wider range of problem statements in animal and human health.

With a focus on the fundamentals of cell biology, animal physiology, drug development approaches and the rational selection of manufacturing technologies, Dr. Breit believes that customized species and drug target specific approaches to drug delivery are infinitely accessible to anyone.  Issues in animal health and specifically equine health often go undefined and untreated and Dr. Breit looks forward to helping create the next generation of therapies to improve the lives of the animals that improve our lives.
